Three out of five (60%) children under five years are stunted (too short for their age) and 34% are underweight (weight too low for their age), according to the 2004 NNS (National Nutrition Survey). These stunting levels are among the highest in the world. Half (50%) of children aging 6-24 months are anemic. Based on NNS findings, one out five (60%) children under five years are stunted and 34% are under weight in Afghanistan.]]></description>

The NGOs have been selected through a competitive bidding process based on internationally accepted norms and procedures.  The eight provinces include: Samangan, Balkh, Sar-e-Pol, Jawzjan, Bamyan, Kunduz, Daykundi, and Kandahar.  In addition to improve provision of BPHS in two other provinces (Parwan and Panjshir) will be provided by the MoPH through Strengthening Mechanism (SM) approach.]]></description>

The cases have been reported from Kabul, Balkh, Parwan, Bamyan, Hirat, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Takhar, Baghlan, Ghor, Helmand, Ghazni, Kunduz and Panjsher Provinces. 332 cases are among foreigners and the remaining are among Afghans. The case fatality rate in Afghanistan is 1.9% which is a bit higher than global rate of 0.5 to 1.5%. High risk groups are pregnant women, children between 6 to 24 months are, and patients with chronic respiratory conditions.]]></description>

						 <description><![CDATA[Dr. SM Amin Fatimie, Minister of Public Health with His Excellency Mr. Yusuf Pashtoon, Minister of Urban Development and Charge de Affairs of Chinese Embassy visited 400 bed Jamhuriat Hospital in downtown Kabul. Mr. Pashtoon pointed out some suggestions for improvement of the building to the Chinese engineers who provided information to him. In two months time the hospital will be ready to be inaugurated and to provide services. The building is 10 storeys and there is an annex building for outpatients as well. All diagnostic equipment are being installed in the hospital. Work on the green area, parking lot and other facilities will be started soon. So far $25 m has been spent in the construction and equipping of the hospital. This hospital has 400 bed capacity and 1200 medical and non-medical staff will be working to provide quality hospital services to the patients.]]></description>

Progresses in health sector in 1387 will bring fruitful results in 1388. In 1387 MoPH was able to spend more than 60% of its developmental budget and 97% of its current budget. Overall expenditure of health sector is 85.2% . With the efficient utilization of it is budget in 1387 MoPH could achieve many results. Comparison of baseline assessments with the internal and external assessments in 26 health clinics and district hospitals shows that 20-40% improvement has been achieved in the area of drug management, immunization, family planning services, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, integrated management of childhood illnesses, management of sick baby, care before and after childbirth, care during childbirth, and behaviour change communications.]]></description>

The staff was on the way to their houses after finishing their work in the clinics. Among the hostages were 6 female nurses and midwives, one child and 4 vaccinators. The kidnappers wanted to take the hostages towards unknown place through Azro district of Logar province. Right after the incident truthful residents of Mosahee released the female staff of the clinics unharmed from the hands of kidnappers. MoPH, since the beginning of new government, in consultation with health stakeholders, has been focusing on adopting strategies to address the high child and maternal mortality levels in Afghanistan. MoPH Afghanistan is committed to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). 						 <description><![CDATA[Dr. Sayed Mohammad Amin Fatimie, Minister of Public Health met Mr. Nicholas Krafft, Country Director of World Bank for Afghanistan and Bhutan. This was the first and introductory meeting between Dr. Fatimie and Mr. Krafft after his assignment to Afghanistan. Both side talked about mutually interested subjects relevant to the proper implementation of Basic Health Services Package (BPHS) in Afghanistan. According the World Bank from 2010 onward part of BPHS expenditures are planned to be covered by Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF), it is a type of donors’ pooled funding mechanism to support Afghanistan government. It is already included in the MoPH budget which has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance (MoFin). MoPH will follow it up with the MoFin at high level.]]></description>

						 <description><![CDATA[The air pollution can cause or exacerbate a number of serious diseases among inhabitants of an air polluted city. These diseases include Ischemic Heart diseases, stroke, hypertension, and a number of respiratory disease and birth defects. Those who are at highest risk of being affected by air pollution are children, the elderly and patients who already have diabetes, heart disease and respiratory disease. Air pollution can also affect fetus in the mothers womb. A large study in Los Angles showed that air pollution due to carbon mono-oxide can increase ventricular septal birth defects. This condition is already high in Afghanistan. Knowing the high concentration of carbon mono oxide in Kabul, it is of great concern to us that birth defects may be on the rise in Kabul. The MoPH will be gathering data on birth defects and other conditions soon.]]></description>

						 <title>Polio eradication campaign was launched in 15 eastern, south-eastern, south-western and western provinces of the country</title>

						 <description><![CDATA[Sunday November 23, 2008 a three day National Immunization Days (NIDs) campaign in 15 provinces, the 5 provinces in southern zone  Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Uruzgan and Nimroz, 4 eastern provinces  Nangarhar, Laghamn, Kunar and Nooristan, 4 provinces of souther-eastern zone Paktia, Paktika, Khost and Ghazni and 2 provinces in the western zone of the country Farah and Herat was launched. This round of NIDs campaign started on November 23, 2008 and will continue for 3 days. MoPH with the technical and financial support from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and donor communities conducts this supplementary immunization so that on one hand high level of immunity should be maintained among less than 5 years age children and on the other hand circulation of wild poliovirus could be stopped inside Afghanistan. With the achievement and sustaining of these two targets, Afghanistan will soon obtain the status of a polio free country.]]></description>

The building was constructed with the 227000 euro financial support of Italian Government and Italian Army under the ISAF set up. From the mentioned amount, 180000 euro was provided by the authorities of Paghmano State of Italy and the remaining 37000 euro was provided by the Italian Army under the ISAF set up here in Afghanistan.]]></description>

Under these contracts, 6 non governmental organizations (NGOs) including 2 national and 4 international will establish 53 sub-center clinics and 16 mobile health teams in 8 provinces, Badakhshan, Jowzjan, Logar, Kunar, Samangan, Ghor, Herat and Kunduz. The cost of the current 8 contracts is 6,631,367 USD for 3.5 years.]]></description>

						 <description><![CDATA[<center>Afghanistan Health System progressing towards self-sufficiency<br>

By completion of construction work of 15 new Hospitals and centers with a capacity of 1750 beds in Kabul and 13 provinces, advanced and sophisticated hospital care and services will be available to the people of Afghanistan</center><br><br>

A survey of more than 8000 households nationwide was done in 2006 by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to measure access and utilization of health services. It found that the proportion of women receiving antenatal care increased from 5-30 %, the proportion of couples who were using a modern form of family planning increased from 5-15 % and the proportion of pregnant women who received attendance by a skilled health worker increased from 5-19 % between 2003 and 2006. A health facility assessment of 600 health facilities each year since 2004, also done by JHU, indicates a 25 percent improvement in overall quality of basic health services. As a result child death rate has declined from an estimated 257 per 1000 live births in 2001 to about 191 in 2006.]]></description>
