3 Staff of MoPH and WHO killed by a suicide attack

Today at 10:00 a.m. three health personnel working for the Ministry of Public Health and World Health Organization were killed after a suicide attack in front of Custom Office in border town of Spin Boldak, Kandahar while monitoring Polio Campaign. Dr. Mamoon Tahiri CDC Officer of MoPH and Dr. Shamsulhaque Kakar, Polio Officer of WHO immediately perished after the suicide attack and the driver died of injuries later in Kandahar Hospital.



Signing Ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MoPH and IARCSC

Today Dr. S.M. Amin Fatimie, Minister of Public Health of Afghanistan and Dr. Ahmad Mushahid Chairman of IARCSC sign an MOU for the establishment of RIMU in MoPH. IARCSC and MoPH share a common objective of enhancing the capacity of MoPH under the second generation Public Administration Reform Programme of the Government of Afghanistan to improve economical and financial effectiveness and constructive and constant public services. Both parties have agreed to cooperate and collaborate with regard to the establishment and operation of a RIMU within the MoPH. On the basis of mutual cooperation and collaboration and in order to give effect to the aim of improved administration both parties have concluded the MOU.

Afghanistan Health System progressing towards self-sufficiency
By completion of construction work of 15 new Hospitals and centers with a capacity of 1750 beds in Kabul and 13 provinces, advanced and sophisticated hospital care and services will be available to the people of Afghanistan


A survey of more than 8000 households nationwide was done in 2006 by Johns Hopkins University (JHU) to measure access and utilization of health services. It found that the proportion of women receiving antenatal care increased from 5-30 %, the proportion of couples who were using a modern form of family planning increased from 5-15 % and the proportion of pregnant women who received attendance by a skilled health worker increased from 5-19 % between 2003 and 2006. A health facility assessment of 600 health facilities each year since 2004, also done by JHU, indicates a 25 percent improvement in overall quality of basic health services. As a result child death rate has declined from an estimated 257 per 1000 live births in 2001 to about 191 in 2006.



52,357 Staff of MoPH and volunteers will drop polio vaccines to the mouth of 7.5 million

Today Dr. S. Moh. Amin Fatimie, Minister of Public Health of Afghanistan officially launched a three day National Immuization Days (NIDs) campaign here in Kabul. This round of NIDs campaign will start on October 18, 2008 and will continue for 3 days. MoPH with the technical and financial support from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and donor communities conducts this supplementary immunization so that on one hand high level of immunity should be maintained among less than 5 years age children and on the other hand circulation of wild poliovirus could be stopped inside Afghanistan. With the achievement and sustaining of these two targets, Afghanistan will soon obtain the status of a polio free country.



Dr. Sayed Mohammad Amin Fatimie, participates in White House Summit on International Development

On October 21, Dr. S.M. Amin Fatimie delivered remarks at the White House Summit on International Development in Washington, D.C.Attended by President George W. Bush,Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, musician and activist Bob Geldof, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley, and other public and private-sector leaders, the Summit focused on the Bush Administration's core principles that have transformed the U.S. approach to international development by linking assistance with results. This approach is producing historic, life-saving results for millions around the globe.
