Global Hand Washing Day
Washing hands with soap is the effective way of preventing diarrheal diseases and respiratory tract infections including pneumonia, which constitute the two major mortality causes in the country. Further, it prevents the occurrence of skin and eye infections. It is also effective in preventing intestinal worms, SARS (What does SARS stand for? Kindly open this acronym) and Avian Influenza. It is even proven to be beneficial for people living with HIV/AIDs.

In Afghanistan, 4 out of every 5 people living in the rural areas are drinking unclean water and one out of every 10 people has access to proper sanitation. Only 30 percent of women wash their hands with water and soap even with difficult access to soap and water. Global Hand Washing Day is the best time to strengthen the joint efforts of Government of Afdghanistan, International Community, Donors, Non-Governmental Organizations, civil societies in reducing maternal and child mortality and improving the social welfare of people. We belief that these efforts will pave the way for increasing awareness of people, creating an enabling environment, providing clean drinking water, providing quality health services and mobilizing communities to participate in health planning and implementation said Dr. Sayed Mohammad Amin Fatimie, the Minister of Public Health. He further added: Lets work together to increase the awareness of the people and publicize the proper behavior of hand washing with soap to overcome the challenges faced by children and women in Afghanistan.

In a research conducted over 30 cases, it was observed that hand washing with soap reduced the cases of diarrhea by half. Also, unclean water, uncooked food, dirty utensils and cloths lead to the spread of infection and by washing hands with soap and water, chances of spread of infection is reduced considerably. Results shows that proper hygiene and sanitation measures, for instance, washing hands with soap and water before eating and after defecation reduce the spread of infections by 25 percent and decreases the incidence of pneumonia in under five years children by 50 percent. It also reduces spread of infections of skin, eye for instance trachoma and intestinal worms particularly Ascariases and Trichuriasis.
